Some people say that watercolor is a tough medium. It really isn’t with a bit of practice, decent materials, and a positive outlook. This 8-week class is structured for ALL watercolor painters, wherever they may be on their artistic journey. Beginners, ‘lapsed’ painters, or experienced watercolorists will be guided and challenged with weekly demos, structured work time, and critique. If you’ve been hesitant to try using watercolor, or simply need to make an ‘appointment’ with yourself to paint each week, want to ‘loosen-up your style, recently retired and have always wanted to learn to paint…
Watercolor Studio is the class for you!
Lessons and demonstrations will be focused on the sea or landscape, portraiture -from photographs or life, still life and abstract ways of using the medium. In this studio class, you’ll learn the importance of the quality of your materials- brushes, pigment and paper; color theory and color mixing; light and value; composition- you’ll start to build a binder of black and white photo references that will serve as visual prompts for weekly painting exercises; and techniques of mark-making and brush use. You’ll have weekly fun among a group of supportive classmates at a variety of skill levels who are excited by everyone’s successes!
Join us… or, at least schedule a ‘drop-in’ to try it out!

gouache bootcamp
Instructor: Tena Collyer
Discover the art of the very underrated gouache medium in this 5 week introductory course.
Often referred to as an ‘opaque watercolor’, gouache (pronounced: goo-aash) is a highly-pigmented, water-reactive medium that dries to a gorgeous velvety-matte sheen. Due to the strong, undiluted pigments, gouache produces a rich, vibrant, opaque color. Historically, gouache was predominantly used for graphic design and ad lay-ups in the (pre-digital) world of advertising .
Throughout this course, students will create several paintings as they garner a better understanding of this medium and all of its possibilities. The overall intent of this course is to teach you how to effectively work with gouache from beginning to end. Topics covered will include painting preparation, maintaining proper paint consistency, color mixing, use and care of materials, available substrate options and final presentation.

The McCarthy Method | Acrylic Studio
Explore the art of acrylic painting with the multi-talented, Butch McCarthy.
‘The McCarthy Method’ was developed with all skill levels in mind, especially the beginner. This would be the perfect place to start your artistic journey.
The ‘Acrylic Studio’ component of class is to allow a space for past-Methods students, or those with a bit more experience to create alongside their peers, under the guidance of Butch.
Regardless if you’re just beginning your journey in acrylic painting, or are a seasoned artist, throughout this 6-week class, Butch will share his method of creating thought-provoking, expressive works of art. Students will learn how to work with the acrylic medium. He will provide students with a solid base knowledge of acrylic paint and how it works. Students will also learn how to prepare the painting surface, develop preliminary drawings and the underpainting, and build-up the final layers to the finished piece.
At the end of these sessions, students will have created two full-sized (11x14) acrylic paintings, and hopefully in the process, learned invaluable tips and tricks from Butch, utilizing his ‘McCarthy Method’.
